Are Oreos vegan?

Worth checking.

By ingredients, yes — there is no milk in an Oreo, and the cream is not dairy. But they are made on equipment shared with milk, so the packet says "may contain milk" and Mondelez does not label them vegan.

The famous misunderstanding

The white bit is not cream and never has been. It is sugar, palm oil and a little soy lecithin. Nothing in the standard Oreo recipe — the biscuit or the filling — is an animal product.

That is why “are Oreos vegan” gets asked constantly and gets two confident, opposite answers.

Why the packet still says otherwise

Oreos are produced on lines that also run milk-containing products. Cleaning between runs is thorough but not absolute, so the packaging carries a “may contain milk” precautionary warning, and Mondelez has consistently declined to describe them as vegan.

Precautionary allergen labelling is about allergy risk, not recipe. It is telling someone with a dairy allergy that trace contamination is possible. It is not telling you that milk is an ingredient, because it is not.

So which is it

This lands on where you draw your own line, and both positions are coherent:

  • If your definition is about ingredients and what you are funding, Oreos are vegan. Most people eating plant-based treat them that way.
  • If your definition includes avoiding cross-contamination, or you have a dairy allergy, they are not suitable — and for an allergy this is not a judgement call at all.

Watch the variants

This matters more than the base question. Oreo makes a lot of limited editions, and the recipes differ by country and by flavour. Some contain milk powder outright — white-chocolate, some filled and coated versions, and several regional specials.

The plain ones are consistent. The interesting ones are not. Check the actual packet, because “Oreos are vegan” is a statement about one specific product in one specific market.

Sugar, in the US

One extra wrinkle for American readers: cane sugar in the US is sometimes filtered through bone char. Mondelez does not disclose its sugar sourcing, so if bone char is part of your definition, that is unresolved. See is sugar vegan?.
